Explore Udaipur – the “City of Lakes” in the state of Rajasthan. Udaipur is surrounded by seven lakes and hemmed in by lush green hills of Aravallis. It is home to historic forts and palaces, museums, and architectural structures. The famous Lake Palace is located in the middle of the pristine Lake Pichola. There are the must-do sights like Lake Palace, Jagdish temple City Palace. This, however, is not your detailed travel guide to Udaipur. Take this as a Udaipur photo diary as I walked around the streets occasionally stopping at the sights as they came along.
I have been wanting to go to Udaipur for the longest time and finally ticked it off my bucket list. I went on a family road trip to Udaipur and nearby Jhadol Safari Resort and it was the highlight of my India trip. I was the only one in my family who was visiting Udaipur for the first time. Imagine having lived in Jodhpur for most of my life, I never visited Udaipur.
We stayed at Raj Kuber a boutique hotel situated on a hillock overlooking the lake. I liked the mix of heritage and french design sensibilities at the hotel.
We started our trip with the magnificent City Palace and walked our way into the city. The city is a labyrinth of narrow streets and your best bet is to explore it on foot.
Every now and then a shop piqued our interest and we went in. I wouldn’t call Udaipur a shoppers delight but you will find local trinkets and artifacts.
What Udaipur lacks in the shopping scene, makes it up in the food department. The Ghats are lined up with quaint cafes and rooftop restaurants that delight you with lip-smacking food and lake views. Ghats are the series of steps leading down to a body of water and Udaipur’s Gangaur Ghat and Ambrai Ghat are notably the popular ones.
There is an attractively old fashioned feel to Udaipur that beckons you to slow down and relax. If you are a tourist in Udaipur, you will marvel at the sights but to truly experience Udaipur you have to take in the serenity of this beautiful city.
Speaking of serenity, if you plan a trip to Udaipur, be sure to visit Jhadol Safari Resort. Jhadol is a village about 50 kms from Udaipur, where lies this oasis nestled in the foothills of the Aravalis at the edge of a magnificent lake. You will find yourself immersed in nature with its rolling hills, calming lake, and wildlife. We arrived a few hours before sunset, just in time to enjoy tea and snacks in our balcony. It is the most tranquil sight and it felt like nirvana. We felt refreshed after a tiring drive. Time slowed down as we walked around the property and watched the sun go down.
After a sumptuous buffet dinner, we went on a night jeep safari through the forest areas to spot local wildlife. It is a thrilling experience. The resort also offers an infinity pool, boat rides, and nature walks. I highly recommend Jhadol Safari for it will rejuvenate your spirit.
