The Classic Sherwani

It is wedding season in India and while the focus mainly remains on women’s wear, it is time we put the spotlight on menswear.

A classic Sherwani is one of the finest piece of ethnic wear for a man. It is a long coat-like garment that originated in British India as the court dress of nobles and royals of northern India. Over the years, it has been adopted by the general public as a form of traditional attire. It is worn over a kurta with either a churidar, a dhoti or a formal pajama as the lower-body clothing.

A sherwani is royal and elegant and makes for the perfect wedding attire. Traditional sherwanis feature detailed embroidery or patterns that match the grandeur of a big fat Indian wedding. However, it has been refreshing to see the changing trends in sherwani this year.

The Indo-western sherwani has been on the rise with a shorter length and a western wear appeal.

Love the deep, dark and wintery hues for sherwanis. A black or navy sherwani are on trend and offer some change from the regular gold sherwanis.

Pastels may not be the popular choice for wedding attire but that has been changing now. Thanks to Sabyasachi, pastels and floralsĀ are a great look on men.
