Newport – Rhode Island

Newport in Rhode Island is a charming little coastal city, popularly called “City by the Sea.” It is mostly known for its spectacular shoreline and Gilded Age mansions that are mostly museums now. The last stop on our New England road trip was Rhode Island and we only had a few hours to spend in Newport.  That meant, going for the top attraction in Newport – Cliff Walk.

Newport’s Cliff Walk is a 3.5-mile scenic path along the coast with beautiful views of the ocean and century-old Rhode Island mansions. If you can only do one thing in Newport, Cliff Walk it is!

An early start to the Cliff Walk meant avoiding the crowds especially the guided tours, and also getting the best light for photography. Although, I am most happy to encounter furry friends wherever I go.

The walk hugs along the ocean shore on one side while Newport’s mansions tower on the other side. The Cliff Walk starts at Memorial Boulevard at the top of Easton’s Beach and ends at the exit at Bailey’s Beach. However, you can choose to start and end it from a different mile marker. The first half of the Walk is flat and paved but it gets challenging as you go beyond the Breakers. We did not walk the whole trail and started from the Forty Steps and walked up to the Breakers. Keep in mind that you will have to walk back the same way to get to your car.

It is totally surreal to sit in front of these mansions thinking people actually lived here and some continue to live in these beautiful homes.
